Why Is It Happening?

Trading Jesus

By Messianic News Editor Jim "Yaacov" Becka

In 1973 while in Israel, I remember reading a story in the Jerusalem Post claiming that large numbers of Israeli Jews were accepting Jesus/Yeshua. But, Messianic Rabbi Mort Petrushansky says many Christians are going in the opposite direction.

Rally For Israel - Houston

The fighting in Gaza is a serious matter and moments during a recent Houston demonstration were serious. The July 25, 2014 rally was also festive. People from throughout Southeast Texas came to the busiest intersection in Texas to show support for the IDF, which is waging war against Hamas.

From Russia To America

By Messianic News Editor Jim Becka

Messianic Rabbi Mort Petrushansky remembers the cold chicken and walk to the nearby synagogue for Shabbat. His parents were Orthodox Jews and very strict in following the law. Later in life, Petrushansky found the Jewish Messiah, Yeshua. When he attended Christian Bible studies he found himself in familiar surroundings. "Everything the Christians were studying was from Judaism," said Petrushansky.

Jesus Movement in Israel

Jim Becka (above) arrived in Jerusalem in 1973, the year of the Yom Kippur War and became part of one of the first Messianic Jewish congregations in Israel (pictured below).

The Jesus Movement was going on around the world and many Jews were turning to their Messiah. A late 1970's issue of the Jerusalem Post claimed that more Jews had accepted Jesus in the 1970's than the entire 2,000 year period following the crucifixion of Jesus.

Many prominent members of Jews For Jesus came out of the movement and some Jewish organizations, such as the Jewish Defense League (JDL) were openly hostile toward Messianic Jews. The JDL was founded by Rabbi Meir Kahane in 1968. Kahane preached violence and the organization was implicated in several bombings. He was eventually assasinated by an Arab gunman in a New York hotel in 1990.

The JDL attempted to create problems for the Jerusalem Messianic congregation and have members jailed for creating a disturbance. During a service, JDL attacked members of the congregation with chairs and tried to set the fellowship building on fire.

"I was sitting on a piano leading singing when this guy stood up and began shouting that Hitler was a Christian," said Becka. "Several other guys stood up and started throwing chairs. They tried to provoke us to fight. But we wouldn't".

The JDL became frustrated when one of the chairs struck one of the attackers on the head and sent him unconscious to the floor.

"It was amazing," said Becka. "The JDL was totally frustrated. They were attacking us and screaming insults and we ended up taking care of one of them. He was out cold on the floor. I think they were a little embarrassed by what they were doing and just left. The Holy Spirit protected each of us."

The Messianic Jewish movement continued to spread throughout Israel. Current estimates are that there are between 15-20 Messianic Congregations in Jerusalem. Read more......
